Italy has become the first Western country to ban ChatGPT, the popular AI chatbot from OpenAI.
The Italian Data Protection Watchdog has ordered OpenAI to temporarily cease processing Italian users' data due to a suspected breach of Europe's strict privacy regulations.
OpenAI faces a potential fine of 20 million euros ($21.8 million) or 4% of its global annual revenue if it fails to remedy the situation in 20 days.
Other governments are grappling with the rapid pace of AI progression and considering regulations or even bans on AI technologies like ChatGPT.
The UK has announced plans to apply existing regulations to AI, while the European Union is developing a groundbreaking AI Act that will heavily restrict the use of AI in certain sectors.
